CHAPTER 7

We walked out of the storage and into the garden, where Lieutenant Braxton and Kenny were sitting at the garden table.

“How are you feeling? I really hope you’re better now.” Jackie flew over to Kenny, peppering him with questions.

“Kenny, how are you feeling?” I asked. “Jackie is really worried about you.”

“I’m good. Thanks!” He offered me a small smile and then chuckled as he blushed. “It’s a little embarrassing. Me hyperventilating in panic, almost collapsing like a fragile lady with a corset.”

“Don’t worry, Kenny,” Rick interjected. “Most people get panicky when they learn that a piece of ceramic in your parents’ collection happens to talk.”

“Thanks.” Kenny’s smile widened as he stood up nodded. “Mom always said that Shino piece was known to talk, but none of us had ever heard it chatting. At the same time, that piece had witnessed some brutal aspects of history. So, when I saw that Shino intact next to the broken pieces and injured Ivan, I thought the teacup used some kind of a hex. Seriously, I started hyperventilating as I thought what if the Shino teacup itself was responsible for Ivan’s injury.”

“Oh, I didn’t think about asking Shino ‘Hey, did you whack that guy in the head?’ Then again, if it was so sinister with means to do so, it should have done something like making a little storm and throwing something at us, right?” Jackie suggested.

“Right.” I nodded and looked at Kenny. “You don’t need to worry about that. Shino had been fast asleep until it woke up in Ivan’s backpack, and it hated that. Also, I didn’t feel anything evil from that teacup.”

“What a relief.” Kenny let out a whoosh of air.

“So, were you able to obtain any information about the attacker of the gardener?” asked Braxton, who had been briefed about the case from Kenny.

“Well, our witness, a Shino teacup from sixteenth-century Japan, had been unconscious while it was in the middle of getting stolen and replaced with a replica,” Rick said.

“Okay.” Braxton crossed his arms, frowning. “I assume it slept through the situation in which our poor victim was brutally beaten up right next to the teacup. Why do I feel I’m guessing right?”

“Ooh, Lieutenant Braxton, you don’t wanna keep on wrinkling your forehead. Giving continuous mechanical damages to the skin is a big no-no.” Jackie made tsk-tsk sounds.

“That’s mostly because your presumption is correct,” Rick replied to Braxton nonchalantly, prompting the lieutenant to wrinkle his forehead deeper and Kenny to shake his head.

“Oh… So, the teacup wasn’t of much use,” he muttered. “Sleeping through the most important parts while being stolen? Wow, some haunted item.”

“Shino talks, but it’s not evil,” Jackie informed him. “Mandy, you’ve got to tell him about Shino’s good aspects such as its friendliness.”

“Sure.” I nodded and turned to Kenny. “Other than being chatty, Shino was just like other highly valuable art pieces. By the way, Kenny, Shino has invited us to visit it once in a while.”

“Really?” His eyes widened. “The teacup must be in need of some company.
